Kollam is a historical city .It had trade relations with Romans,Chinese,Portuguese,Dutch and British people from very old days .
Geography of Kollam
Kollam is located on the southwest part of Kerala State and extends from Lakshadweep Sea to the Western Ghats .It is bordered by Trivandrum district on the South,Alleppey and Pathanamthitta districts in the North,Thirunelveli district of Tamilnadu State in the East and Lakshadweep sea in the west.Kollam has 21303 hect of wet area ,140455 hect of dry area and 81438 hect of forest land .
Climate of Kollam
The district has tropical humid climate with an oppressive summer and plentiful seasonal rainfall.The district receives an average 2555mm of rainfall annually. The hot season is from March to May .It is followed by the southwest monsoon from June to September. The northeast monsoon occurs from October to November. The rest of the year is generally dry.
Rivers passing through Kollam
Main rivers of Kollam district are Achenkovil,Kallada and Ithikara .All these rivers originate in the eastern hills and flow towards west.These rivers together with their tributaries exhibit dendritic pattern of drainage.
